  7. Identification: 16-60 in; shiny black back with 
  8. white or yellow spots; belly is yellow with 
  9. alternating black blotches; scales smooth.

  11. Habits: King snakes are common in woodlands 
  12. and suburban lots adjacent to wooded areas. 
  13. King snakes are also found in pastures near hay-
  14. stacks where their prey of mice or rats can be 
  15. found, though birds, bird eggs, and other snakes 
  16. can make up their diet also.

  18. Distribution: Throughout Louisiana.

Comments: These snakes are very common in Louisiana and beneficial to have in our environment. While they help keep the rodent population in check speckled king snakes also devour other snakes which include the venomous ones, hence the name of "king of snakes". Though nonpoisonous themselves king snakes are immune to their prey's venom. This snake is also called the salt-and-pepper snake.
